Boomer

This is Boomer.  Boomer was a Great Pyrenees in the Duplin County Animal Control shelter in Kenansville, NC. Unfortunately, this is a kill shelter so Boomer had only a few days left. North Carolina Coastal Pyrenees Rescue said they would take him  if we would sponsor him. We quickly got pledges from our members for $150 and NCCPR committed to take him from the shelter, but before NCCPR could pull him, we all had a pleasant 
surprise.  Boomer was adopted from the shelter!

Dewey

October 31, 2010.  Meet Dewey, our first project after Doomed Dogs went on Facebook. He was on death row at the animal shelter in Gaffney, SC and was scheduled to be killed in two days.  Doomed Dogs raised $75 to sponsor Dewey with the Cherokee County Humane Society.  The Humane Society pulled him from the shelter, got him neutered and checked out medically and then found a rescue to take him. He was later adopted by a nice family.

Baron

We joined with other donors to sponsor Baron, a sweet Pyr mix, to keep him out of a kill shelter in Arkansas.  Alissa, the selfless woman who runs Arkansas Great Pyrenees Rescue, now has him in a foster home.

Blackjack

Blackjack is Fluffy's son.  He was dumped at the shelter at the same time she was.  They are inseparable, so when the Great Pyr rescue in New Hampshire took Fluffy, Blackjack got his Get-Out-of-Jail-Free card, too!  We sponsored Blackjack's transport to New Hampshire.

Fluffy

Fluffy, a lovely three-year-old pure bred Great Pyr, was dumped at a shelter because her family "did not have enough time for her".  She would have been put to sleep if not for Lonestar Pyrs and Paws, a fantastic, large Great Pyr rescue in New Hampshire.  We sponsored Fluffy to pay for her medical and transport from a shelter in Tiptonville, TN to New Hampshire,

Korine

Updated 12/19/10:  Korine is now doing very well in foster care with Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta, but this is how she looked in mid-October.

Korine is a pure-bred Great Pyrenees that was apparently deliberately starved by her owner.  She was found as a stray and the people at Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta immediately volunteered to rescue her.

We sponsored part of the costs for GPRA to help this poor, mistreated dog.

GPRA is doing a fantastic job in bringing her back to good health.  Here's what she looked like after a month - amazing how fast she recovered:

This is a picture of what she looked like in December - hard to believe it is the same dog!  GPRA rocks!

Hobo

Hobo was a stray picked up in rural South Carolina.  He ended up in the Gaffney, SC kill shelter, where he languished.  He reached his deadline to be put to sleep, and the Cherokee Humane Society got a reprieve for two days.  They asked us to sponsor his boarding for a few weeks until they could find a rescue to take him. We did, they pulled him on on the last day and now he is safe in rescue!

Cookie

Cookie was dumped at the Gaffney, SC kill shelter.  No one was interested in adopting her, so she was due to die.  In a package deal with Hobo, the Cherokee Humane Society got her a reprieve while they looked for a sponsor.  We agreed to sponsor both of them, they were pulled at the last minute and they are both safe in rescue!

Manny

Manny is a gorgeous young Great Pyrenees.  He is a long-time buddy of Bonjo.  They ended up in the same kill shelter and while we were helping National Akbash Rescue save Bonjo, Manny came as a package deal.  We sponsored his medical costs and boarding costs while a foster was found.  He is now being fostered in Tennessee.

Bonjo

Bonjo is a handsome young Akbash dog, a relative of the Great Pyrenees.  He was doomed to die in an Arkansas kill shelter when we spotted him on-line and notified National Akbash Rescue.  They agreed to take responsibility for him if we sponsored him.  He was pulled from the shelter and is now being fostered in Arkansas while he waits for the right owner to come along.  We sponsored his medical and boarding costs for a few weeks while National Akbash arranged for a foster.  Bonjo is a good example of a situation where the Doomed Dogs Rescue's support makes the difference between life and death to a dog - if not for our sponsorship, the rescue could not have taken the financial risk of indefinite boarding costs while a foster was found.

Poptart

Poptart is a friendly young Labrador Retriever.   He was picked up as a stray and ended up in the Gaffney, SC kill shelter.  He had only a day left before being executed when we offered to sponsor him.  The Cherokee Humane Society accepted our offer and pulled him from the shelter.  We made a donation for his medical and boarding costs.  He is now with a foster family in South Carolina and would love to be adopted by the right forever family!

Talon

Talon is a Great Pyrenees that ended up in a Georgia kill shelter.  We spotted him on Petfinder and asked Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta to rescue him, promising to sponsor him.  As usual, these wonderful people agreed to take him.  He is now with a foster family.

Tyler

Tyler is a cute little Shih Tzu, but that didn't keep him from ending up in the Gaffney, SC kill shelter.  When he had one day left before being killed, we offered to sponsor his medical costs and boarding if the Cherokee Humane Society would pull him.  Although they are very overloaded, they were very happy to agree!  Tyler spent a couple of weeks with the Humane Society and then was adopted by a nice lady from Georgia!

Spud

One of the best Pyr rescues in the country is Lonestar Pyr and Paws in New Hampshire.  They have a big foster network and very actively transport dogs from kill shelters in the South.  The weather is far better for Great Pyrs in NH than in Georgia!  When we heard they were bringing in an Akbash from the South, we offered to sponsor him.  Though he has a down-to-earth name, Spud is a gorgeous dog.  We can only hope his forever owners change his name to something more fitting!

Dallas

Dallas, an Akbash puppy, and his brother Wrangler were together at the Yolo County, CA kill shelter.  We sponsored half of their surprisingly high medical bills to assist National Akbash Rescue and Sierra Pacific Great Pyrenees Rescue in saving these boys.

Wrangler

This is Wrangler.  He and his pal Dallas were in a high kill shelter in Yolo County, CA when Sierra Pacific Pyr Rescue and National Akbash Rescue heard about him.  They pulled him from the shelter but were shocked to hear how much his medical bills were going to be.  We sponsored half the medical bills for the two of them.  Wrangler is now in foster with Sierra Pacific Pyr.

Beluga

This is Beluga, a large Great Pyrenees.  He was an inmate in the kill shelter in Cullman, GA  when we were working on saving Charlie.  When Charlie was taken by another rescue, Great Pyr Atlanta asked us to sponsor Beluga instead, which we did.  They pulled him from the shelter, put him in foster, and them found a great family to adopt him!  

Here's what the shelter had to say about him:  Beluga is the ultimate big dog that thinks he's a small puppy. He is very loving and wants so badly to be with people. He cries when we put him up. At play time, he would rather walk alongside the volunteers rather than forge ahead on his own. We believe he is probably 3-4 years old. This was a guess based on looking at his teeth. He does like to jump up, which can be a problem because he is very powerful. Hopefully this is a behavior we can correct. I am 5'10" and when he stands up, he is at my shoulders easily. He is very gentle when he does this but it could easily knock someone over. He was adopted a few months back and we found him wandering as a stray. The adopters were called and they surrendered him back to us. I want him to find a home that is prescreened and understands the breed so he never has to be put through this again. He is still very trusting of people despite his ordeal. He has been neutered and his shots and rabies are current.

Charlie

This friendly young Pyr/Akbash boy is named Charlie.  We spotted him on-line in the kill shelter in Calhoun, GA and notified Great Pyr Rescue of Atlanta.  We made a donation to sponsor him.  GPRA went to pick him up only to find that another rescue had beaten them to it!  So we sponsored Beluga instead.

Beau

Beau is a strong, young Anatolian Shepherd, a close relative of the Akbash and Great Pyrenees.  The National Anatolian Shepherd Rescue Network asked us to sponsor their saving Beau from the kill shelter in Lubbock, TX.  We did and they took him into their foster program.

Chlorox

Chlorox is a big white dog that we spotted on-line in the Gaffney, SC kill shelter.  We thought he was an Akbash or a Great Pyr and called the shelter to find out if we could sponsor him.  The Cherokee County Humane Society works with the shelter to find homes for the shelter animals.  They accepted our sponsorship and found a rescue for him, the Coastal NC Great Pyr Rescue.  This was an important event for the Doomed Dogs - since then, we have sponsored many more dogs with the Cherokee County Humane Society and also with Coastal NC Pyr Rescue.

Even though it turned out that Chlorox is probably a big Lab mix rather than a Pyr, Coastal NC found him a home with a great family!
