Pilgrim is young (around 12 months old), sweet, pure-bred Great Pyrenees. His owner brought him into the kill shelter in Waco, TX so the shelter could find him a new home. Completely clueless or just totally uncaring? Who knows? What we do know is that it takes a miracle for an owner-surrendered dog to make it out of a busy kill shelter alive. Very often, the dog is killed as soon as the owners walk out the door, because there are no laws protecting surrenders like the laws that protect strays. Imagine having a beautiful, sweet boy like Pilgrim and not even taking the trouble to look for a rescue to take him. What jerks his former owners are!

Luckily for Pilgrim and his eventual new owners, our friends at the Great Pyrenees Rescue Society of Houston heard Pilgrim was at the Waco shelter and, relying on your sponsorship, they scooped him up!

Klondike

Klondike is a skinny 18-month-old, pure bred Great Pyrenees that needs our help. He is Snow's brother, the handsome Pyr you sponsored last week. In the picture, Snow is on the left and Klondike is on the right. If you remember the story, Klondike and Snow were starving strays that some farmers in Missouri were using for target practice because they were scavenging a meal  from a deer carcass.

The county sheriff got reports of gun fire and came out to investigate. He was worried, not so much about the dogs, but that a bystander might be shot, so he calmed things down and called for animal control. They brought they boys to the local kill shelter, where they had 4 days to live. On the last day, the owner hadn’t shown up, and the animal control officer called our friend Carolyn at Bear Creek Rescue and told her that the boys would be put down in the morning.

Carolyn rushed to the rescue and pulled them out that same night. They are now safe at Bear Creek.

Klondike and his brother are inseparable. Carolyn hopes to keep them together if she can find an adopter who will take both of them. Klondike, like Snow, is something of a wild thing, fearful and non-social. He is very underweight at 81 pounds - he should be well over 115 pounds. Carolyn will fatten him up and work on socializing him, and then find him a home. She needs our help to pay for vetting and boarding Klondike.

Champ

Could you spare $5 to save this frightened baby?

This scared boy was in the not-so-luxurious kill shelter in Florence, AL. What a dump! Champ had little time left when a shelter volunteer recognized that he is a Great Pyrenees and called National Great Pyr Rescue, who suggested that our wonderful friends at Great Pyr Rescue of Atlanta might be able to take him. GPRA asked if we could sponsor and of course we said we would. Just look at that picture – poor Champ is scared to death and that place looks horrible!

Betty

Could you donate $5 to support this promising but difficult girl?

This pretty lady has potential but she has been a Bad Dog.  Betty and her boyfriend were just too much for their owner (who did NOT do a very good job raising them).  Lucky for them, their owner found a rescue to take them, our friends at Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta, rather than dump them at the local kill shelter, where owner surrenders (especially rowdy ones!) have very short life expectancies.  The boyfriend quickly found a home but Betty had “behavioral issues” and no one in their right mind would adopt her.  (Behavioral issues in a 120-pound Pyr are a little bit more serious than in a 15-pound Shih Tzu!) After a number of bad experiences with potential adopters (imagine them running away, screaming), GPRA put Betty into boot camp with a trainer for a few weeks on a farm to smooth out some of her rough edges.  

GPRA has already spent a small fortune on Betty and asked for our help to pay for some of the costs of supporting Betty through the long process of rehabilitating her.

So, if you believe that good dog parenting (and rescuing) means never giving up on a Bad Dog, and you want to help give Betty another chance to find a permanent home with a family, please help raise $125 to support Betty while she transitions from a rebellious youth to becoming the sweet adult she can be!

Delilah

Could you spare $5 to save this beautiful puppy? (And, yes, $5 really does help - with 600+ members in our group, no one needs to make huge contributions to save her!)

Delilah is a beautiful 12-month-old Great Pyr puppy. She was picked up as a stray and ended up in a kill shelter in rural Tennessee. She was facing death when we spotted her online last week. We sent out emails to rescues, asking for someone to take her. Our friends at Lonestar Pyrs & Paws in New Hampshire agreed to take her, with our sponsorship! To save her, we need to raise $160 to pay for her vetting and a portion of the transport costs to bring her to safety.

Titus

Could you donate $5 to save this innocent baby?

What a sad, scared little boy Titus was as he sat in the Waco, TX kill shelter last week. Only 3 months old, his irresponsible witch of an owner had just dumped him in the shelter because “he was getting too big”. What exactly did she think the “Great” in Great Pyrenees meant went she bought this dog? 

She should have understood (and maybe she did understand) that as an owner-surrendered dog in a kill shelter, Titus would be lucky to be alive by the time she drove back home. Titus literally had no hope – there was no stray hold to protect him and the only thing keeping him alive was the fact that the shelter wasn’t killing dogs that day. Miraculously for Titus, a kind shelter volunteer called our friends at the Great Pyrenees Rescue Society of Houston. Knowing that they could count on our sponsorship, GPRS immediately committed to taking Titus out of the shelter! 

Your continuing, dependable donations allow our rescue partners like GPRS to commit to take dogs on the spot, knowing that they will have the funds to help pay for pulling fees, vet bills, and transport. You have been, and are, helping to save lives everyday!

Titus is just a little pup and deserves so much better than he got from his first owner. He has the gorgeous badger markings common of some Pyrs and looks like he will be a big, beautiful boy with the loving care he will now get thanks to you and to GPRS.

Marcia

Could you donate $5 to save this innocent puppy?

Marcia, a gorgeous Pyr pup, was found this week in a ditch on the side of a busy interstate highway in Georgia. She had no tags, no microchip and no identity. She was very lucky to be found by Gus, a passing motorist and dog lover. Gus enticed her into his car (not everyone would invite an excited, muddy and enormous unknown dog into his car!) and got her safely out of traffic. Rather than take her to a kill shelter where she would likely be put to sleep, Gus figured out what breed she is, did some internet research and did exactly the right thing – he called our friends at Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta. GPRA asked if we could sponsor her vet and other expenses, so that they can afford to take her.

Snow

Snow is a handsome, 18-month-old, pure bred Great Pyrenees that needs our help to survive. He and his brother Klondike were strays, minding their own business, wandering around in the country near Rolla, MO looking for something to eat, when they found a deer carcass. (In that area of the country, animal carcasses are pretty common sights.) They were scavenging a meal, when some farmers spotted them. The farmers figured it would not take long for Snow and Klondike to progress from dead deer to live calves, so they went home to get their guns.

They came back and started shooting, luckily not very well. Perhaps they had been drinking? 

The county sheriff got reports of gun fire and came out to investigate. They captured Snow and Klondike and brought them to the local kill shelter. The wild boys had 4 days to live (the pound has to wait a few days to see if their owner would show up). On the last day, the owner hadn’t shown up, and the animal control officer called our friend Carolyn at Bear Creek Rescue and told her that the boys would be put down in the morning.

Carolyn never hesitates when a dog’s life is on the line, so she rushed to the rescue and pulled them out that night. They are now safe at Bear Creek.

Wild Buddy

Could you donate $5 to save this wild dog that deserves a chance to be a pet?

Buddy is a gorgeous young Great Pyrenees or Pyr/Akbash. He was a wild, timid dog living on his own near Carrolton, GA, so fearful that no one could touch him. He developed some trust in a nice woman who left food out for him and she tried hard to coax him into being petted, but he always shied away. Buddy started hanging around her house, but he was still painfully thin. Buddy was in a terrible situation - needing humans to survive, but too fearful to allow himself to be helped.

We have a wild dog just like Buddy living in our neighborhood named Stoner. Stoner, a huge Pyr/Akbash mix, was the original inspiration for the Doomed Dogs Rescue Club. You can read his story on our website at http://doomeddogs.blogspot.com/2010/12/stoner.html 

Stoner breaks our hearts - he is so thin and so needy, but too wary to be approached so you can help him. My neighbor, Cindy Mozingo, a huge contributor to the Doomed Dogs, is like the nice lady in Carrolton - she feeds Stoner, but she can't pet him!

Anyway, the nice lady in Carrolton was worried about Buddy, so she asked animal control to pick him up. Unlike Stoner who has eluded animal control many times, Buddy did get captured eventually and brought to the kill shelter. Our friends at Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta found out about Buddy and rescued him. We agreed to sponsor a portion of the cost of his rescue.

GPRA says that Buddy is very sweet, but still wary - it will take a lot of time and love for him to feel comfortable with people.

Shaggy

Could you spare $5 to save this abandoned boy?

Shaggy is, well, a shaggier Great Pyr than most of that shaggy breed. He is a wanderer, as is common in Great Pyrs. He was picked up as a stray and ended up in a rural Georgia kill shelter. The shelter knew exactly who his owner was - but his owner didn’t feel like coming up with the cash to pay the shelter bill after he was picked up as a stray so, he told the pound to keep him. It is sort of the coward’s way to get rid of a dog you don’t want. 

As an owner give-up, he had very little time to live when Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta found out about him. They quickly committed to get him and he is now safely in foster. Shaggy is a laid-back, friendly dog - but he needed to be neutered and requires expensive treatments for his heartworm. We agreed to sponsor him to help GPRA afford his vet bills.

Winston

Winston is a gorgeous Pyr-Collie puppy. He has been living in a kill shelter in West Tennessee for months since his owners dumped off when he was just 4 months old. The shelter has no room for him inside, so he has been living outside in the cold weather. He has heartworm, so no one has been interested in adopting him. His time at the shelter was up when a Cathy, very nice lady who volunteers at the shelter, fell in love with him. Her circumstances prevent her from adopting him, but she started sending emails to everyone she could think of, trying to find someone to save him. Eventually, she found a small rescue in PA to take him, but the rescue can only take him following his heartworm treatment. A friend of friend referred Cathy to us and we agreed to sponsor Winston.

Based on our sponsorship pledge (which is based on your continuing willingness to chip in and help these helpless and hopeless dogs), Cathy has taken him out of the shelter and taken him to a vet to begin his treatment. It is likely that without our Club, Winston would be dead by now.

Eight Kentucky Puppies

Could you please make a small donation to help save these adorable puppies?

A few days ago, National Great Pyr Rescue learned of a litter of St. Bernard – Great Pyrenees puppies that were left at a kill shelter in rural Kentucky. The lady who runs the shelter never even let them in the door – fearing they might catch parvo in the shelter, she took them to her own home! 

This was very fortunate. In many kill shelters, puppies are destroyed immediately, as they are difficult to care for and easily get sick. 

The nice shelter lady contacted NGPR who contacted our friends in New Hampshire, Lonestar Pys & Paws, who agreed to take the whole litter. We agreed to sponsor the little guys to help pay for vetting and transport to safety.

The pups have worms and need vetting, but they are safe and on their way to New Hampshire right now. Leslie and her group at Lonestar will ensure that the puppies all find good homes.

Rocky

Could you give $5 to save this big boy?

Rocky had a happy life for four years, doing what Great Pyrs do best – guarding goats. He was bonded with a female Pyr and life was great. Then his owners sold him and he went to another farm. Unfortunately, his girlfriend did not go with him. This can be a very traumatic event in the life of a Great Pyr and so Rocky started having problems at the new farm. He started wandering away, making him useless as a guardian dog. So his unsympathetic new owner dumped him at the local kill shelter.

He would have died there if not for our rescue partners, Bear Creek Rescue and National Great Pyr Rescue. We are sponsoring their efforts to save him!

Carolyn Jordan of Bear Creek says he is sweet, social and easy to handle. He is learning now to be a pet rather than a part of the livestock – and that can be confusing. (We once had a foster Pyr that had been a guardian dog and it took him a couple weeks just to learn to deal with stairs!)

Sherbet

Could you spare $5 to save this poor dog?

Sherbet was very lucky that the day his owners brought him to the vets to be put to sleep, our friend Shari Drube was in the waiting room.  Here is how she described it:  “[They brought in] a 2 year old, sweet, sweet, sweet male Pyr to be euthed because he was staying skinny, but their other dogs were fat. He had been in a pen with other dogs and had an injured eye last month from the others beating up on him. Now I am no rocket scientist, but could it possibly be that the others were keeping him from eating or maybe the fact that he had never been wormed/vetted contributed? The people were sobbing when they dropped him off and the vet tech brought him right to me where he implored me to save him without words. Such a sweet boy, rubbed his head against any hand he saw and pleaded with those liquid brown eyes. We are thinking of naming him  Creamsicle, Push Pop or Sherbet because that is his color from being rolled  in the cold, orange mud by the other dogs.”

 

Shari, of course, scooped him up.  She and the wonderful people at Lonestar North will nurse him back to health, get him vetted, transport him to safety in New England and eventually find him a good home.  Unfortunately, Sherbet has a number of medical issues aside from being painfully thin – he has worms and needs operations on both knees.

They need our help to save this sweet Pyr.  Our donations will help with the vet costs for this poor guy.

Lilah

Could you chip in $5 to help this poor girl?

Lilah is a livestock guardian dog who lost everything she had in life. In the last 6 months, her long-time bonded mate was killed in a car accident, her 80-year-old owner died, her 2-year-old pups were shipped away, all 12 pups in her last litter died and she caught a severe case of ehrlichiosis. Lilah has been taken in by the patron saint of lost Pyr cases, Carolyn Jordan at Bear Creek. 

The one thing that seems to be doing Lilah any good, is that she is taking care of Bubby, the wild pup we sponsored last week. According to Carolyn, “She is babysitting "Bubby" the needy feral kid that lost his mamma. She's not too happy with him, but she hasn't killed him yet so we're calling it a success, LOL.”

We are sponsoring Lilah to help pay for her vet bills and other costs of rescuing her.
