This is Morgan, a 5-month old Feist puppy.  (A Feist is an ancient breed of high-energy little terriers popular in the Carolinas.  Our word "feisty" comes from this breed.)  Morgan ended up in a kill shelter in South Carolina and no one wanted to adopt him.  His time was up and he was slated to die.

With our sponsorship, the Cherokee County Humane Society pulled him and boarded him. If not for you and your wonderful support of these doomed dogs, he would be dead in that shelter already. Because of your donations, he will instead eventually find a good home.

Rescue Trip for 48 Dogs

Our friends Connie and Dave are planning another trip this week.  This time it is a trip from Oklahoma to bring at least 48 doomed dogs and puppies to safety in Minnesota.  Our $200 sponsorship is about $4 a dog - amazing how cheap it can be to save a puppy's life!

Here's the plan, from Connie:  "We went yesterday to Forrest City, Ark and picked up all of their puppies/4 dogs that were going to be put down today. A total of 32. Those plus 14 puppies from a rescue in Muskogee, OK and 2 puppies from Flint Ridge, OK, and 5 puppies from Dr. Elliott are leaving tonight for MN."

This is the pretty gyrl they call the "Burleson Pyr".  She was stuck in a kill shelter in Texas for over a month and her time ran out.  No one wanted to adopt her and she was going to be put down.

Angus was a stray in rural Alabama at the age of 10 weeks.  It is hard to imagine how or why someone would dump this beautiful puppy and leave him to die.  Angus was picked up by animal control and brought to a kill shelter.  Great Pyrenees Rescue Atlanta took him with our sponsorship, even though  they are very, very full.  Our sponsorship is helping them to afford to vet and foster him.

This is Keesha, a young pit bull mix.  She was dumped at a kill shelter in rural South Carolina along with her 5 puppies. As is true in many neglect cases, she was emaciated, as she literally gave her body's life to nourish her puppies.

Unfortunately, Keesha is heartworm positive, an expensive condition to treat.

Luckily, with our sponsorship for part of her medical bills, the Cherokee County Humane Society pulled her and found a rescue to take her and the puppies!   If not for you and your wonderful support of these doomed dogs, she would be dead in that shelter already. Hawk

This adorable little toy poodle is Hawk.  Here is his story, from Judy Wyles at the Cherokee Humane Society:

...Hawk, a 3 yr. old male toy poodle who was hit by a car today and brought in by animal control.  Tina was at the shelter and called to ask if I would authorize treatment.  Otherwise he would have been put down.  Of course I said yes, so she took him to the vet's also.  Hawk had a lot of skin taken off his back legs like he was dragged, and x-rays showed that he may have a spinal fracture.  He can't use his back legs right now, but he is eating and sitting up and only time will tell if he makes it.  When you see his photos, you'll know why we named him Hawk.

Our sponsorship will pay for boarding Hawk and help pay for his medical bills.

44-Dog Trip to Chicago

Our friends Connie and Dave are planning another trip this week.  Here is a note from Connie:

We just got back from transporting last night. All in all 51 puppies were transported. 

Another transport is set for this Friday, the 15th, to Chicago. Right now the following are scheduled to go: 

6 puppies (dumped in Petco parking lot) from Jackie

2 puppies  -  from Susan

4 puppies  -  from Vian area

14 puppies -  from Lou

15 Big Dogs  

1  puppy from Connie named Cherokee - please see picture of this special baby whom I have named Cherokee.

I received a call from another county about a mom and her puppies running around town. The mom is feral and keeps having puppies. This little guy (around 9 weeks old) is missing his back foot. Do not know if it was caught in a trap or what. The other back leg has damage too, but looks like he has been burned or acid put on it. We are on our way to the vet with him right now. The girl told me that no one wants to help the dogs in their area. No one. I told her that we have to live trap the mom and catch the other two babies.  I think this baby could have some great pyr in him and the other two puppies. I will have to try and find some live traps, seems no one has any or wants to help us to catch them.  As always these trips are critical to save these lives.  We are so very thankful to all who help us to help them. Connie and David

Buddy is a big Great Pyrenees.  He had some bad luck resulting in his becoming a homeless stray wandering on a rural highway in Georgia.  A common story for this breed, but a scary one.  Stray dogs have a very dangerous and often short existence in rural America.  Buddy was picked up by animal control and brought to a kill shelter.  No one wanted to adopt him and things looked bad for him when Great Pyrenees Rescue Atlanta learned about him.  Although they are very, very full, GPRA stepped up to take him in.  Our sponsorship is helping them to afford to vet and foster him.

 "Tiger is an amazing and handsome boy who didn't deserve the abuse he received from his owner. From the time he was a puppy, for two long years, he was chained up and almost starved to death. Then he ended up at Murray County [kill shelter] where The Rescue Express saved him at the very last hour.  Having such a hard life hasn't affected his ability to love and be affectionate.   He is neutered and up to date on shots, but is heartworm positive and needs treatment immediately. Please help us give this gorgeous boy a chance at the life he was born to live and deserves."

These lonely little puppies had this picture taken in a small kill shelter in rural Texas.  Part of the same litter as the two we helped save a week ago, they had been found at the side of the road near their mother, who had been killed by a car.  Emaciated, they were very lucky to have survived until animal control picked them up.  They were even luckier that our friends at the Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue pulled them from the shelter before they could be killed. Our sponsorship money will go toward their vet bills and other costs.
