Skooter only needs a few small donations to reach safety in New Jersey - please help!


Skooter is a cute little terrier mix, full of energy and love.  He was picked up as a stray and ended up in a kill shelter in rural South Carolina.  A great rescue in New Jersey has agreed to take him and put in him a foster home while they find him a forever home.  There’s only one problem – no one involved has any money to get him out of the shelter and transported to New Jersey.  The good news is that we need only $75 to save his life!

Please help us raise the $75 we need to get Skooter out of the kill shelter and safely to New Jersey.  If we can raise the money, our good friends at the Cherokee County Humane Society will take him out of the county animal control and pay the transporter.

Bella

Bella’s owners didn’t want her anymore, so they dumped her at a kill shelter in rural Texas.  Fat chance of someone else wanting to adopt her in the few days the shelter would give her!  In fact, no one wanted to adopt her and the shelter reached out to the Great Pyrenees Rescue Society to give her one last chance.  GPRS asked if the Doomed Dogs would sponsor her to save her.

Max

Could you give $5 to save Max?

We first spotted Max online a few weeks ago in the Bolivar, MO kill shelter.  We emailed many rescues to see if someone could help us save him.  Missouri is a tough place to rescue from – there aren’t that many rescues there and loose regulations have created a cottage industry of many puppy mills (which we DESPISE!), so the few rescues that are there are usually overloaded.

Bear Creek Rescue offered to save Max.  Bear Creek is an animal sanctuary (think horses and llamas) but they are also very active in saving Great Pyrs. 

What’s cool about Bear Creek stepping up to save Max is that, although he is a big, white dog, he's not a Pyr - he’s an American Bulldog!

The Colonel

A funny thing happened when we asked the Great Pyrenees Rescue Society to rescue Snowball, a sad-eyed Pyr girl in the kill shelter in Ft. Worth that we spotted online – they went to get her and she had been adopted.  But what did they find there? Her brother, Colonel, unadopted and waiting unsuccessfully for someone to take an interest in him or for the axe to fall.  So they asked us to sponsor him instead of Snowball.

We almost never say “no” to a dog on death row, so here we go.

Colonel is a gorgeous, fun loving pup that deserves a better life than one in a cage at the shelter.  GPRS, with their wonderful foster program and great adoption track record, are just the people that can ensure the gets a great life.

Denver

Would you give $5 to save a puppy’s life?

Last night, I received an urgent FB message from DDRC member Michelle Cook about Denver, a little Pyr puppy about to be killed (possibly today) at the shelter McKinney, TX.  Luckily for Denver, we have wonderful partners in the selfless dog lovers at the Great Pyrenees Rescue Society in Houston.  I got in touch with GPRS, told them we would sponsor Denver and begged them to help.

GPRS did not disappoint!  They will pull Denver from the shelter today (to keep him from being “accidentally” killed).

Denver will have a lot of puppy bills – neutering, shots, etc. so our sponsorship will be $160.

This whole chain of events shows how your continuing generosity strengthens our relationships with great rescue organizations.  That allows the Club to pro-actively identify dogs on death row and find someone to save them.  The fact that you donated so much, so quickly to GPRS this month to help save Bailey, Dolly, LuLu, Clooney, and Mr Maxx means that GPRS is here for us in an emergency like today’s!

Mr. Maxx

Update:  We raised the money needed for Mr. Maxx!  He is now safe with good prospects for being adopted by a loving family - thanks to you!




This poor guy was incarcerated in the Brownwood, TX kill shelter, the same shelter that held LuLu and Dolly.  This picture was taken in the shelter.  You can see from the picture just how nicely they treat the dogs there.

He doesn't have a name. [Update: our first donor chose a name for him:  Mr. Maxx] In the shelter he had nothing, life was not good and he was doomed to die.  The Great Pyrenees Rescue Society asked if we could sponsor his medical costs to enable them to rescue him.   Once he’s cleaned up, GPRS should have no trouble finding an adopter.  Surely someone will fall in love with that mellow, patient face!  Don't you just want to give him a hug?  (And a bath - though not in that order!)

Update:  The Doomed Dogs raised the goal amount: $155!


Courtney is a sweet Great Pyrenees girl.  Her owner wanted to get rid of her, so he dumped her at the kill shelter in Heard County, GA. We spotted her on-line last week and alerted Great Pyr Rescue of Atlanta.  We asked if they would take her out of the shelter if we would sponsor her, and, as usual, they didn't disappoint!  GPRA wasted no time and she has already been pulled from the shelter.  Once again, your continuing generosity allows us to make commitments to sponsors, and, once we commit, the rescues are taking the dogs out of the kill shelters even before we get donations.

Courtney is very affectionate and friendly. She is now in foster in Atlanta, awaiting her forever family.

Shy Boy

Update:  we raised a total of $175 to pay for Shy Boy's vet bills!


This beautiful Great Pyr is called "Shy Boy" by the woman who found him. We need to come up with a good name for him!

He is the partner of Clooney, the handsome boy we helped save last week in Childress, TX.  Because he is (or looks like) a short-coated Great Pyr, Shy Boy is a lucky dog as far as being rescued is concerned because three breed groups consider him theirs: Pyr people think he is a Pyr, the Akbash people think he is an Akbash, and the Anatolian Shepherd people would claim him, too!  His rescue is being orchestrated by Janet Davis at National Akbash Rescue http://akbashrescue.blogspot.com/ with the cooperation of National Great Pyr Rescue (since they sometimes can't tell the dogs apart, the two groups work together!)  Akbash rescue is a wonderful organization, saving many dogs on a shoestring.  They couldn't afford to save Shy Boy if not for our help.


Here is the story of Clooney and Shy Boy from Janet:

These two are about as needy as it gets! They were picked up on the side of the road. They had been dumped there most likely because they were there a few days in the same exact spot. This is what dogs do when they are dumped....wait for someone to come get them again, heartbreaking!!!
    The local shelter were they were taken is very high kill. New leash laws have taken effect in this area so loose dogs are rounded up, impunded and euthanized after 72 hours. The shelter is very small, just sheds sort of....no shots are given and no hope of rescue such as internet listing etc.

   Terry is a local woman that does her best to get dogs out sometimes. She saw these two and a hound dog on Friday. They were due to be euthanized last Friday Dec 10th. She got the shelter to give her the weekend to get help from rescue. She spoke to the mayor recently and got the town officials to let her pull dogs for free.
     I just spoke to her and told her there would be sponsorship money and I would help her get them to foster...she can keep them a week or so. I have foster in Missouri for the Akbash so we need to find foster for the Pyrenees.

     She has a vet in town that gives her really good rates. She can get the neuter for about 75-80 Then all their shots for 40. That puts it at about 120. for each plus a heartworm test. I am thinking a 125-150 range sponsorship for each should pay for what they need.  [Shy Boy had other issues that raised his bill to $175]

      She will go get them Monday and take them right to the vet. I will be finding a 501c3 to pay the vet bill and then the sponsorship $ can go to that group...sound good?

This is Sabrina, a lovely three-year-old Great Pyrenees.  She was dumped in a kill shelter in Tennessee and had only a few days left when Great Pyrenees Rescue Atlanta asked for our help to save her.  We promised we would sponsor her for $125 and GPRA committed to taking her from the shelter.  They will bring her to Georgia and put her with a foster family.                                              Please contribute to save this pretty girl!  She has a lot of life yet to live, and the Doomed Dogs Rescue is key her survival.

Clooney

Update:  The group decided to name this elegant boy "Clooney".  We raised the money needed for him, he is now out of the shelter and in boarding.  Great Pyrenees Rescue Society of Houston will get him the week of Dec 20.


This is a male Great Pyrenees in a kill shelter in Childress, TX. He does not yet have a name. Read the story below and you can see that you all are having a big influence on Pyr rescue in the South and South East - people are coming to us for help to save dogs! Several rescues are now thinking that DDRC will help and so they are being more aggressive on pulling dogs from shelters. This is a wonderful result of our work and you should all feel great satisfaction at the good we are doing! Thank you all for your continuing generosity!

"Just spoke with the clinic where the dogs are. The male Pyr is estimated between 6-8 because they notice a hind end weakness a bit. Don't know as they have been on the run for a bit. They have not had time to closely examine them yet. His teeth are in good shape. They wanted to add another 50 to the 300 estimate as he is in bad shape with cockle burs embedded. For the fifty they will bath, remove burrs and get him all cleaned up. I said yes as the temp foster will have her hands full enough without trying to figure out how to fix his matts and coat and sticker problem.

I will also be one of the contributers the Doomed Dog fund raising efforts. I have foster in Missouri lined up for the Akbash...and will handle all his transport foster and adoption arrangements so just the Pyr needs help with all that. 
Once foster is found for the Pyr let me know where and I will help with transport ideas...

I contacted our friends at Houston GPRS and at Oklahoma NGPR - both of whom have taken dogs for us before. They both said they would take the male Pyr!

Anyway, without our group, these dogs would already be dead because the rescues couldn't afford to take them.

National Akbash Rescue will pay part of the expenses for the Pyr and GPRS will also, but I told them we could probably come up with $150 to pay for the vet.

So could you please help save this boy? Again, the people that donate get to name him, just like LuLu yesterday - that should be fun.

Foxy and Pups

Here's a message from Linda Palermo:  Thank you EVERYONE so very much for your contribution! This is such a big help for Mom Foxy and her babies! We typically rescue one dog here and there and do the best we can but when a Mom and pups came along that can really bust the bank account! We appreciate this sooo much that words can never describe. These cute puppies need our help. Linda and Michelle are starting a new rescue called TenderHeart Rescue. They are located in rural Georgia, where the need is great. They had contacted me a few weeks ago about our supporting their rescue. Here's an email I received from Linda a few days ago:

"When we were leaving Petsmart adoptions on Saturday we were approached by another rescue group regarding this mom dog and her pups. No other rescue had room for her and the pups had just been born outside the night before. We have had record lows temps in GA and it was about to get really nasty outside (teens). Even thou we didn't have the funds or the room we took in this poor baby and her pups who were all left outside on purpose by the idiots where she lived. We got them Saturday night (thanks to Michelle) and on Sunday we lost one pup. Mom rejected her. We had 6 boys and two girls. Even thou we typically rescue Pyrs, as you see it doesn't matter when a baby is in need!" 



TenderHeart is just starting, doesn't have much money and is not yet a 501c3, so donations may not be tax deductible. Linda and Michelle need our help with these puppies - the vet bills will be enormous (though, hopefully, the adoption fees will cover them eventually).

Samantha

Update:  The Doomed Dogs came through with enough money to save Samantha!  She is now in Atlanta in foster with the Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta.  
This lovely, sad-eyed young Great Pyrenees girl is Samantha. She had the misfortune of becoming a stray. She was picked up by animal control near Knoxville, TN and went to a kill shelter - the same one that we helped Clarence escape from last week.

The wonderful people at Great Pyr Rescue of Atlanta asked us to help them rescue her. They will make sure she is vetted and put into their foster progam in Georgia, where she will eventually find a good, forever home.

Loomis (LuLu)

Update:  We raised the money needed, and the major donor to her cause decided to name her "Loomis" or "LuLu" for short - a name everyone seemed to like! 
 This is 54, another pure-bred Pyr, in the kill shelter in Brownwood, TX. See the ugly tag tied to her neck - that's how her rancher owner kept track of her - by number, not by name, just like a steer. She was downsized from the ranch and ended up the shelter to be put to sleep. Nice human being, that owner.

Anyway, she is a real sweetie and still trusting and affectionate to humans, despite her history.

When the people from Great Pyr Rescue Society went to pick up Dolly for us, they noticed 54 at the pound. They asked if we could sponsor her, so they could afford to take her on. I told GPRS that we would try to raise $125 and they said that would be enough to enable them to save her.

Since 54 does not have a name, GPRS said that we could name her!

Glory

Update:  DDRC raised the money Glory needed!  Glory is out of the shelter and has already gone to her new permanent family!

This beautiful, pure-bred Great Pyrenees is Glory. She is two years old and sweet as can be. She now belongs to a kill shelter in Arkansas. This is a shelter that tries hard not to have to euthanize, so they have had her in foster. Unfortunately, her foster time has run out. She is being returned to the shelter where she has very little time left before they will have to kill her.

I have been looking for the last couple of weeks for a rescue to take her. Alissa, the wonderful NGPR person in Arkansas, said she would take Glory if we can sponsor her. We need to raise $150 to get Glory safely out of the kill shelter by Wednesday and into the loving arms of Alissa and NGPR. This money will pay for her vet bills and boarding for a week. (We only pay a portion of the total costs - the cost to a rescue for a healthy Great Pyr is typically around $500 when all the expenses are taken into account.)

Faith

Update:  the Doomed Dogs did raise the money to pay down the vet bills for Faith.  She is safe, happy and waiting to find a special family of her own.  Lynne Galloway of NCGPR wrote to us:  
"Thank you guys so much!!! I am looking at her sweet face right now and her and I both say a huge THANK YOU!!!! She still needs the perfect home for her remaining golden years, as the home we had planned on for her fell through, so if anyone is in proximity and interested, please comment here! Thank you so much, without you guys, we wouldn't have been able to do what we've done with her!!"


This little lady is Faith, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She has been a victim her whole life yet just responds with love to any affection she gets. She is around 10 years old and has been in the hands of a puppy mill since she was a puppy. Year in and year out she has lived in rough conditions, producing litter after litter. She had a prolapsed uterus from the last litter (born just 10 weeks ago) and was ready for the garbage heap when the puppy mill got busted.


A kind rescuer took her and a big group of other Cavaliers from the puppy mill. Our old friends at Coastal NC Great Pyr Rescue agree to take in Faith and 6 others - even though Cavs are very different from Pyrs!



The Cavs turned out to need a lot of vetting and Coastal, like most rescues, was not prepared for a big financial shock. They spent $600 just on getting Faith fixed up. 

Coastal asked if we could help pay part of the vet bills for Faith.

Clarence

Update: The  Doomed Dogs came through with the dough and Clarence was saved by the Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta!  He is now living with a foster family in Atlanta.


This handsome young guy is named Clarence. He is in a shelter in East Tennessee (where I come from originally). You can tell from the picture that there are very caring people there that try to find places for the dogs to go. Unfortunately, even nice shelters run out of room and then they have no choice but to create room.

I spotted Clarence earlier in the week on Petfinder and asked the Mary Lou at Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta if they could stretch their rules a little and take him even though he is not in Georgia. Mary Lou said yes, but can the Doomed Dogs help with a sponsorship to pay for transport and some medical?

Well, I told her we could and they arranged to pull him from the shelter!

The shelter says that Clarence is about 4 years old and very sweet. He was found as a stray without a collar or microchip and his owner has not claimed him, poor guy.

A note on GPRA - this group was started in January 2010. I first contacted them early in the year and found that they are very well organized and try hard to help all the Pyrs they can. Doomed Dogs has sponsored several dogs with them, and before we started Doomed Dogs, I sponsored several other dogs with them. Clarence is the 99th Pyrenees that they have saved in just 12 months! Amazing!

I think they are wonderful to work with. They will get Clarence checked out at the vets, pay for all medical costs, put him in a loving foster home and eventually find him a permanent home.

Toby

Update:  The DDRC came up with the promised donations.  Toby is safely out of the shelter and into rescue with Arkansas GP Rescue, but he is not in good health.  Alissa wrote to us:  "The bad news is that Toby is in much worse shape 66 lbs, hook and ring worm and HW+. Some unidentifiable skin condition to boot. Poor guy. The transport person reports that he is a lover dog, calm and relaxed. He had 2 baths at the vets office, they said he was so caked with feces and urine that they wouldn't neuter him until he was relatively clean."  Alissa is nursing him back to health, but it will be a long, expensive process.  

This is Toby. He got in a bad situation and was facing death when Arkansas Great Pyr Rescue got involved. Here's what I heard from Alissa:

"I was contacted 12/02 by the Cabot Animal Control about a male pyr Toby that had been "rescued" from his farmer owner that was going to shoot because he accidently suffocated a lamb he was guarding by laying on it. The rescuer has lost her job and has been unable to provide proper careor shelter for Toby and several other dogs. The Animal Control Officer is trying to work with the rescuer and other rescues to take the dogs prior to arresting the woman for animal neglect. The Animal Control has a foster for 2 wks after Toby's vetting. Which would perhaps give us time to find a more permanent foster or an adopter and bypass the whole boarding issue. The total cost of his vetting barring any unforseen skin issues is $125. I apologize for asking so soon after Glory but it seems like desperate dogs in Arkansas NEVER stop coming. I had no idea how many needy dogs were around until we started rescuing. Sometimes I feel like I'm shell shocked from the day to day dombardment of desperate dogs. If it's too soon just say so and I will figure something else out.

The Animal Control Officer will get pictures this weekend on an unofficial visit. She also said that if they have to take Toby into the Shelter that another dog or Toby will probably have to be PTS."

"PTS" means "put to sleep".

I told Alissa we would sponsor Toby, so when he did go to Animal Control, NGPR stepped in and took him out. He will go to the vets tomorrow.

Because you all have been so generous in donating, more and more now all we have to do is say we will sponsor and the rescue will move forward and take the dog out of the shelter! That takes a lot of the stress out of the situation.
