Alva is a Great Pyrenees  that was neglected by her owners along with 16 other dogs they owned.  The owners were forced to give up the dogs and with perfect governmental logic, the poor dogs were sent to a kill shelter for their protection.  Alva has no chance of adoption at the little kill shelter and she is doomed to be put to sleep on Friday.

With our sponsorship, our friends at the Great Pyrenees Rescue Society of Houston have agreed to pull her and a large number of other dogs from the shelter.  You will see more of these dogs posted soon.  If you love Great Pyrs and homeless dogs in general, please help!   GP Rescue is being overwhelmed by the number of unfortunate dogs facing death.

Psalms is a little Great Pyrenees puppy that was abandoned.  She was probably part of a litter and the breeder couldn’t find a buyer for her – so he dumped her in the country.  Some people found her and brought her to a shelter.  Unfortunately, it is a kill shelter and even if it were not a kill shelter, shelters generally are about the most dangerous place to bring a puppy  because they have little resistance to many canine diseases.

With our sponsorship, our friends at the Great Pyrenees Rescue Society of Houston pulled her from the shelter before she could be killed or catch a fatal disease. Our sponsorship money will go toward vet bills and other costs of fostering her until a permanent home can be found.

Prissy

Prissy had the bad luck to end up on a farm instead of a suburb.  She lacked training as a puppy and got in the habit of chasing chickens.  Her owners could (or would) take the time to train her properly, so they took her off to the local kill shelter to get rid of her. 

Poor Prissy was terrified at the shelter.  She was sick with hookworms and tapeworms and had an infection in her ears.  She was not a good candidate for adoption with these problems and being so nervous.  No one wanted to adopt her, so her future looked very grim.  Luckily, with our sponsorship, Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta agreed to take her in.  Our sponsorship is helping them to afford to vet and foster her, while they find her a permanent home.

Storm is a handsome Great Pyrenees dog, about two years old.  He turned up as a stray in Alabama right after the recent tornados.  Picked up by animal control, he was unclaimed – no one knows what happened to his owners.

As part of the big effort made by rescue groups all over the South to help the tornado victims, our friends at Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta arranged to have him transported to Atlanta.  We agreed to sponsor him.  Our sponsorship is helping them to afford to vet and foster him, while they find him a permanent family.

Chanel is a Great Pyrenees puppy that was abandoned and lived as a stray.  She caught a nasty upper respiratory infection at the shelter.  At the shelter, there was no medical care available for her.  With this illness, she was unadoptable and was slated to be killed.

Cleburne Boy

This enormous Pyr-Leonberger mix was at the kill shelter in Cleburne, Texas.  When Heidi was adopted straight from the shelter, the people that donated for Heidi generously agreed to have their contributions used to save this boy.  Our friends Gisela and Rosie from St. Cloud's pulled him from the shelter and will give him a new chance at life!

Here is his story from Gisela:  “He is in horrible shape.  He was covered in ticks and fleas and is at least 40 pounds underweight.  He has massive hair loss.  He has either kennel cough or an uri.  He is heartworm positive.  We are hoping the cough is not indicative of stage 4 heartworms.  We are waiting to find out that information.  He needs to be completely vetted and neutered (once he is healthy enough).  With all that going on he is a sweetheart!  As I bathed him he just laid his head on my shoulder.”

get her to Texas.

Grace was kept as a breeding slave by a backyard breeder without much human contact.  She produced litter after litter for sale.  When she was getting too old, her owner dumped her at a kill shelter.  This sort of thing makes me sick - how can people be so inhumane?

Of course, no one wanted to adopt this old, unsocialized girl.

Pood Tucker’s owner died and no one stepped up to take him in. Instead, no one cared for him and eventually the owner’s sister dumped him in a kill shelter, in terrible condition – covered with ticks, fleas and sores.

Here is their story, from Christiane of GP Rescue Montana: 

"Lena was dropped off at a shelter in Southern Utah with a terribly infected 3" deep  wound all the way around her neck. Only 4 months old, she is also infested with fleas and very emaciated. The vet theorizes that she was tied up as a freshly weaned pup with a wire or nylon cord and left that way for months. As she grew, the cord slowly ate into her flesh. The owner dropped her off at a kill shelter once he realized what he had done. The shelter has no vet on staff and gave Lena no medical care. They report noticing a strong odor of corruption, but did not even get close enough to this poor baby to realize she was a girl- they were advertising her as a boy. Finally, they e-mailed Great Pyrenees Rescue of Montana. With the help of other rescue folk, we got her into a clinic, where she underwent surgery for her wound for several hours. So far, her medical bill is up to $1,650. We desperately need help to pay for this poor baby's care! The good news is that she is recovering well and loves to snuggle and cuddle. With your help, little Lena will have a happy, long life and hopefully be able to forget about her suffering. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated!"

This wonderful Great Pyrenees boy was a starving stray wandering around rural Texas.  He had the bad luck to be hit by a car.  As a result, he had a back injury that has left one leg paralyzed and his head was badly cut open.  He also has heartworms – an expensive condition to treat.  Kahuna ended up in a kill shelter with very little chance to be rescued – who would want such a damaged dog?

With our sponsorship, our friends at Lonestar Pyrs & Paws Texas took him in.  He will need a lot of extra care, but he is safe and will hopefully get a family of his own someday.  Our donations will go towards his vet bills and foster costs.

Tulip is an old Great Pyrenees dog that spent many years chained up.  She slept under a junk car.  She had a choke chain that was cutting into her skin.  When her owner gave her up, she had kennel cough and heartworms.  Why would anyone adopt her?

Lucky for her, the Oklahoma affiliate of National Great Pyr Rescue was up to the challenge.  They got our agreement to sponsor and stepped up to save this old dog.

54 Dog Transport North

Our friends Connie and Dave are planning another trip next week. This time it is a trip from Oklahoma to bring at least 54 doomed dogs and puppies to safety in the Windy City.  Our $200 sponsorship is less than $4 a dog - it can be so cheap to save a puppy's life!

This transport is planned to take 42 puppies, two moms, and 10 little dogs.  12 of the puppies have a particularly sad story.  They were born to a little Beagle (see the picture) and their owner refused to feed them or care for them.  Fortunately, a woman in the neighborhood brought them food from time to time.  Connie and Dave took them, covered with ticks and fleas.  Now the Beagle pups have bright prospects, at least if we can contribute gas money.

Connie and Dave regularly drive around and pick up doomed dogs from shelters in Oklahoma and Missouri. These dogs would likely be put to sleep if not for them.  Your donations literally make the difference as to whether there is enough gas money for these trips to happen or not and whether these dogs live or die- thanks for your support!
