Reno
Could you donate $5 to save this unlucky dog?
Reno was a disaster story. A stray in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, he was hit by a car and his broken but still breathing body was brought to the kill shelter. The shelter took one look at him - crushed pelvis, broken femur and two broken hips - and scheduled him for euthanasia. Then another dog hit by a car came in and needed an immediate transfusion. Reno wasn't going to be needing his blood much longer, so they used his barely breathing body to harvest some blood.
A couple of hours before they were going to put him to sleep, the shelter remembered that our favorite saint, Carolyn Jordan of Bear Creek, had a standing request to be notified of any Great Pyr that came in. So they called her and she agreed to take what was left of him, sight unseen. Smart move? Probably not, but the rescue world is made up more of big hearts than calculating minds.
The story gets worse - Reno is heartworm positive, ehrliciosis positive (a bacterial infection that lowers the immune system), severely malnourished (he weighs only 59 pounds) and has glass and cinder fragments in one eye. Carolyn brought him to the University of Missouri where he had FHO surgery (removal of the ball of the hip joint to reduce pain). To continue his unlucky streak, Reno caught a staph infection at the hospital.
On the bright side, he is now recovering from the surgery and the staph infection and is safe and snug at a foster home. He should recover enough to lead a pain-free and happy life with the right family
